Denatured alcohol is ethanol that contains special additives which render the product undrinkable, whilst not chemically reacting with the ethanol or altering its aroma profile. As such, denatured products are generally not subject to the excise duties applicable to undenatured alcohol. In the case of our perfumery, pharmaceutical and cosmetics grade alcohols, the additives are typically Bitrex or Diethyl Phthalate (DEP).
